Trading cards go through a multi-phase printing process that involves several layers of color, stamping and cutting individual cards from sheets. The sheet of cards must be passed through printing machines several times to complete this process, which means that errors are bound to happen occasionally.
CGC recently received a submission containing a very interesting Peter Parker Mythic Rare Borderless foil from the recently released Magic: The Gathering Spider-Man set. Take a look: This Peter Parker, Magic: The Gathering (2025) Marvel’s Spider-Man – 0232 Mythic Rare – Foil – Borderless was severely misaligned in the printer, resulting in only half the card being printed on the correct portion of the cardstock. The other half incorrectly shows a Miles Morales Mythic Rare Borderless Scene card.

Additionally, the image on the back of the card is entirely wrong, and it’s printed upside down! In the Spider-Man set, many cards feature a unique back that also acts as its own card, or an evolution of another card. Unfortunately, because this sheet was improperly oriented during printing, the front of the card was paired with a back design that was never meant to accompany it. That’s why this Venom appears on the back of the misaligned front error, even though it doesn’t belong on either Peter Parker or Miles Morales.

This type of error occurs when multiple things go wrong during the printing process, usually in sequence. First, the sheet of cardstock was mistakenly fed into the printer backwards (that’s why Venom is upside down). The fronts of trading cards have more margin space, causing them to become misaligned and inverted. Finally, the sheet was reoriented before it was cut, aligning the cutter with the back of the sheet instead of the front.
The Marvel's Spider-Man MTG set is beloved by both MTG and Marvel fans. Although the Peter Parker Borderless Foil card isn't the most expensive card in the set, rare errors such as this one make this particular example very interesting and valuable to collectors. If this card ever is offered at auction, it is sure to turn some heads!
