Since 2015, Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung published a trilogy of illustrated books called “The Monsters.” Inspired by Nordic folklore, The Monsters features a playful tribe of female elves known as “Labubus,” devilish-but-cute monsters who are kindhearted and eager to help but often end up causing mischief instead. Lung’s series features about 100 different Labubus with different names, with a character simply known as “Labubu” often featured as the main character.
After publishing the trilogy, Lung created a small line of toys, charms and figurines to go along with the books. It became popular after Chinese company POP MART partnered with Lung to sell the toys in storefronts and vending machines in 2019, but then absolutely exploded in 2024 when Lisa — a member of Korean pop band BLACKPINK — was spotted with a Labubu charm on her purse, with several other celebrities (such as Rihanna and Kim Kardashian) following suit.
Since then, Labubu has become a global phenomenon. The figures are now sold around the world in blind boxes, each of which contains a mystery Labubu doll and a collectible card that identifies the doll inside. Some of the cards are clear cards with a character sitting inside, such as the Sisi above.
As of early July 2025, CGC has certified more than 250 cards from How2Work’s The Monsters Series and POP MART’s Labubu Monsters Cards sets, according to the CGC Cards Population Report. This Sisi card is the only example currently in the CGC Cards Population Report.
